Marvel Universe fans are counting down the days to watch the X-Men spinoff movie "New Mutants" in theaters on August 28th. Advanced tickets went on sale this week, along with 2 newly released theatrical posters to keep fans hyped. Die-hard fans have been waiting for the movie since the trailer was released in 2017.

Directed and written by Josh Boone, “New Mutants” was originally slated to hit theaters in 2018 and has been pushed back four previous times before landing its most recent release date of August 28, 2020. The movie was originally developed as a 21st Century Fox property before Disney acquired many of Fox’s entertainment properties, playing a part in the film’s prolonged release along with the Covid-19 pandemic.

The film stars Emmy® nominee Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Henry Zaga and Blu Hunt. The producers are Simon Kinberg, p.g.a., Karen Rosenfelt and Lauren Shuler Donner with Stan Lee and Michele Imperato Stabile serving as executive producers.

Rahne Sinclair (Williams), Illyana Rasputin (Taylor-Joy), Sam Guthrie (Heaton) and Roberto da Costa (Zaga) are four young mutants being held in an isolated hospital for psychiatric monitoring. Dr. Cecilia Reyes (Braga), believing the teenagers are a danger both to themselves and to society as a whole, keeps a close eye on them as she struggles to teach them how to rein in their mutant abilities. When newcomer Danielle “Dani” Moonstar (Hunt) joins the other patients in the facility, strange occurrences begin to take place. The hospital’s patients are plagued by hallucinations and flashbacks, and their new mutant abilities—and their friendships—will be tested as they battle to try to make it out alive.

New Mutant Powers Explained:

Danielle Moonstar aka Mirage (Blu Hunt) creates illusions from other people’s fears; Rahne Sinclair (Maisie Williams), transforms into the werewolf Wolfsbane; Sam Guthrie (Charlie Heaton), plays Cannonball, who can fly at jet speeds protected by a force field; Roberto da Costa aka Sunspot (Henry Zaga), absorbs and channels solar power; and Illyana Rasputin, aka Magik (Anya Taylor-Joy) who plays the younger sister of Colossus and becomes encased in armor that amplifies her varied superhuman and psychic abilities.

This IGN video does a great job of explaining each role in the film:

Comic book art enthusiasts will be thrilled to catch a glimpse of master illustrator Bill Sienkiewicz’s artwork in the closing credits, who has been drawing the famed characters since 1984. Sienkiewicz also created theatrical movie poster artwork for the film where re-envisioned the classic Demon Bear comic (New Mutants #18) with the stars of the 'New Mutants.'

‘New Mutants’ will be released in AMC heaters, Dolby Cinema theaters, Regal Theaters, Cinemark Theaters and more on August 28th, 2020. Check your local theater listings for details.
