With President Donald Trump intensifying measures against immigrants residing illegally in the U.S., some families are apprehensive about sending their children to school. Various groups have developed Know Your Rights and Red Cards to remind immigrants of their rights and guide them on how to assert these rights when confronted by federal agents from ICE or the border patrol.

These groups include the Los Angeles Unified School District, which is currently handing out “red cards” – also referred to as “Know Your Rights” cards – along with additional resources to inform immigrant community members of their legal rights.

Immigrants across the country are on edge about possible Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations following executive orders issued by President Donald Trump. The cards, which are standard 3.5” by 2” business cards, will help immigrant Angelenos “assert their constitutional rights in encounters with federal law enforcement officials,” according to the Community Resource Guide for Immigrant Angelenos, which was put together by the L.A.

The Office of Immigrant Affairs under Mayor Karen Bass is now providing access through LAUSD. These cards are accessible to both citizens and non-citizens. Created by the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC), the documents are available in 16 languages, ranging from Spanish to Haitian Creole to Tigrinya. Click here to access them.

The Red Cards feature information about constitutional rights immigrants have, including:

  • You don't have to open the door to your home if a federal agent knocks

  • The right to remain silent in front of federal agents

  • The right to not sign any document unless you have a lawyer present

For more information about Red Cards visit ilrc.org or click here to download and print a Spanish version. Red Cards are available in other languages.
