The American Music Awards or the AMAs got its start in 1973 when music icon Dick Clark created the show for ABC. It was a show that was meant to not only compete with the Grammy Awards but also to highlight rock and Top 40s hits. It's considered one of the "Big Three" award shows in the music industry, with the Billboard Music Awards and the Grammy Awards as the other two. The AMAs are public awards, meaning that the fans can vote for their favorite artists to win. The event includes live performances from popular stars across genres.
The AMAs are home to many special awards in addition to offering awards in categories like Favorite Album or Favorite Female Artist. The Award of Merit has been awarded to more than 30 artists, with the most recent one honoring Sting in 2016. The AMAs also highlight international artists with the International Artist Award of Excellence. Past winners of that award include Michael Jackson (1993), the Bee Gees (1997) and Whitney Houston (2009). Rihanna took home the Icon Award in 2013. Taylor Swift earned the Dick Clark Award for Excellence in 2014. The Award of Achievement has gone to several artists, including Katy Perry in 2011 and Garth Brooks was the Artist of the Decade for the 1990s
